Man arrested after trying to run-over police officers

A man was arrested after allegedly trying to run over police officers during a vehicle check.

Police said the driver of a van failed to stop at the police check point at Mdina Road in Attard. At around 11.30pm, officers signalled the van driver to pull over as the van appeared to have an expired license. However driver increased speed in the direction of the police, who had to get out of the way to avoid being hit by the van The police followed him until they surrounded him in Attard Road, Zebbug. During the chase, officers saw the driver throw an object from the van. That turned out to be a loaded firearm.

The suspect driver tried to resist arrest before being subdued by officers.

A search of the vehicle revealed a container in which there was a white substance, suspected to be cocaine. Officers later carried out a search of a garage in Birkirkara and the suspects residence in Zebbug where more substances suspected to be cocaine, heroin and cannabis, weighing scales, a large knife with a 45cm blade, and bullets of different calibres were found.

The man is being kept under arrest at the Police lock-up in Floriana.

Investigations are ongoing.
