ThroughMater Dei Hospital, Malta has been considered one of the countries where mechanical thrombectomy procedures are being performed on patients who are suffering from a stroke.
In fact, Malta has been placed in the same category as countries like Belgium and Switzerland, which are renowned for this service. During a visit to the Medical Imaging Department at Mater Dei Hospital, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne saw the way in which the continuous investment in the hospital’s advanced equipment is helping the professionals determine the condition of the patients in a shorter time and how it is leading to a more accurate treatment and as soon as possible.
Consultant Reuben Grech explained that the results of patients hospitalized with stroke are improving. This is both through the hospital’s medical equipment which confirms in a shorter time that the patient’s symptoms are caused by a stroke and also through modern procedures, such as the mechanical thrombectomy. He meant that the stroke patients who were in a condition that allows this procedure to be carried out have increased substantially since this service began to be provided, eight years ago, with an increase of 300%.
The deputy prime minister joined Dr. Grech in an appeal to people who feel the symptoms of a stroke to immediately go to the emergency for help in light of the fact that in these cases time is precious to be save the brain cells and the patient recovers in the best way. While praising them for the international recognition, the Deputy Prime Minister Fearne thanked all the workers of the department who with a joint effort are saving lives that were previously lost.
