The Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands, Silvio Schembri announced a simplification scheme for those who discovered that a small part of their house was once built on government land.
Until now, in these genuine cases, a tender would have to be issued and all the paperwork that it entails and the part of the property would be bought by the owner according to the current market price, even though the property has been bought decades earlier.
“We felt this was not fair, therefore now property owners who have a house built on government land such as part of the parapet, yard, garden or part of a room that does not exceed 50 square meters, will be able to buy this part at a fixed price,” said Minister Schembri.
The price will be €200 per square meter for residential development and €400 for each class of other use. “This is another election promise fulfilled during the first few months of this legislature,” Minister Schembri said.
Only a few days away from the Budget, Minister Schembri recalled the work of this government to see that the economy in our country continues to move forward at a good pace, including by creating new industries such as is being done in the fields of esports, video game development, blockchain and crypto, among other technologies.
Robert Vella, the Chief Executive of the Lands Authority, said that this is just one of a number of simplification schemes that the Lands Authority is working on, as there were a number of processes that in the practice do not work and make it more difficult for people. He explained that now with an application completed by an architect, which would provide details on the property, the anomaly would be fixed for a reasonable fee.
