Two Maltese men have been arrested in connection with the discovery of about 34 kilos of suspected cannabis with a market value estimated at around € 700,000.
The arrests were made after days of observation on suspected drug smugglers travelling
to Malta from Sicily and at a garage being used in Żebbuġ.
Late Saturday evening, Police from the Anti-Drug Squad, assisted by the Rapid Police
Intervention Unit (RIU), followed a van that had just landed in Malta from Sicily. The van then entered a garage in Żebbuġ and shortly afterwards two cars came out of the same place and were stopped men were arrested.
When officers opened the van, a bag containing € 300,000 in cash was found. Police suspected that there were fake compartments in the vehicle and dismantled panels and found the drugs in various bags.
The two men, one 39-year-old and the other 36-year-old, are being held in the lock-up of the Police Headquarters in Floriana.
