The Minister for the Elderly and Active Aging Michael Farrugia announced that the Silver-T service, which is a free transport service offered to the elderly over the age of 60 who need assistance from their service, from today it will be extended in the locality of Mellieħa.
Minister Michael Farrugia also announced that the Department of Active Aging and Community Care is in the process of extending this service on a national basis through a tender for electric vehicles.
He explained that as soon as we have a national service, it will start operating on a system of zones where Malta and Gozo are divided into 12 zones so that the elderly can go beyond their locality.
The Minister also said that over the past year, the Department of Active Aging and Community Care has received over 8,000 calls and 8,275 trips have been made. It offers a service to seniors who want to go to places like the bank, pharmacies, clinics, local council and various other essential places in the same locality.
The Silver-T service is just one of 24 services offered by the Department, with the goal of encouraging seniors to live more independent lives in the community.
The service operates Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. till 2.00 p.m.
