Malta has been elected, for the thirteenth time in a row, to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which is the United Nations governing the maritime sector. This election took place yesterday in London during the 32nd session of the General Assembly of the same organization.
This result is very prestigious for our country and confirms that Malta has one of the largest registers of merchant ships in the world and that it enjoys the respect of the international community in this sector.
Earlier this week, the Assembly was addressed by the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Ian Borg, who reiterated his support for Malta’s continued commitment to the International Maritime Organization. for a number of topics of special interest to Malta.
The IMO Council is the executive body tasked with overseeing the entire operation of the organization. The forty members of the Council were elected from among the 176 member states of the organization. These elections will ensure that the Council is made up of members with the highest maritime interests, as well as ensuring that all regions of the world are represented on this Council.
Minister Borg, who led the delegation during the Assembly which was virtually held due to the pandemic situation, thanked Transport Malta officials who, with the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, worked to achieve this success. Minister Borg hoped that Malta would continue to take an active part in this Council in order to further increase safety and efficiency in the field of shipping.
This result further renews the Government’s commitment so that Malta continues to strengthen its position in the maritime field in order to further grow the esteem that Malta enjoys in this field so important for our country. .
