Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, in his capacity as Chair-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), announced on the eve of the conclusion of Malta’s OSCE Chairpersonship that Switzerland will assume the Chairpersonship in 2026. This decision, reached by consensus among the 57 participating States, highlights the OSCE’s resilience and its pivotal role in fostering dialogue and cooperation amid global challenges.
Following the conclusion of the Ministerial Council, Malta maintained its commitment to safeguarding the OSCE’s functionality – a core focus of its Chairpersonship. “From the outset, Malta’s Chairpersonship embraced the motto ‘Strengthening Resilience, Enhancing Security,’ which has guided our efforts to reinforce the OSCE as a cornerstone of international peace and stability,” emphasised Borg.
The selection of Switzerland as the 2026 Chairperson marks a significant milestone in ensuring the Organization’s continuity and resilience. Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg expressed confidence in Switzerland’s ability to lead effectively, citing its experience, commitment to multilateralism, and dedication to advancing peace and security. “Switzerland’s leadership will be instrumental in steering the OSCE through these challenging times,” he added.
As Malta concludes its Chairpersonship, it takes pride in its contributions to preserving the Organization’s integrity and enhancing its capacity to deliver on its mandate. Deputy Prime Minister Borg reaffirmed Malta’s continued support for the OSCE and its incoming Chairs, stating, “Our legacy as Chair of the OSCE is a more resilient Organization – not perfect, but stronger and steadfast in its resolve to move forward. We look forward to continuing close cooperation with Switzerland as Troika members as of the 1st of January.”
The OSCE Chairpersonship rotates annually among participating States, with the Foreign Minister of the Chairing State serving as Chair-in-Office. The Chairpersonship sets the Organization’s priorities and drives decision-making during its tenure.
