Malta calls for the Adoption of a Joint Decision on Culture and Climate Action The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici called for the adoption of a Joint Decision on Culture and Climate Action during the COP29 conference, a crucial step that leads to a more structured cultural response during the editions next of the COP.
The United Nations Conference on Climate Change of 2024, COP29, is the 29th United Nations Conference on Climate Change that this year is being held in Azerbaijan. The second Ministerial Meeting brought together an international action group known as “Group of Friends of Culture-based Climate Action” of which Malta is a founding state. Minister Bonnici appealed for support for the request for a Cultural Workshop during COP29, which is considered an important step to establish a Joint Decision on Culture and Climate Action.
This initiative is crucial to build a cultural pillar for climate response, which should be consolidated in the adoption of COP31. Minister Bonnici said that Malta fully believes that this is an indispensable step to ensure that culture and art are at the center of global efforts against climate change. He stressed that each country should be given the freedom to act according to its needs and resources, while collaborating internationally to address the climate crisis. “One-size-fits-all approach does no good because every country has its own unique characteristics,” repeated Minister Bonnici.
The Minister emphasized the unique role of culture and art in the fight against climate change, and explained how they have the power to inspire people. He also mentioned how artists around the world are using their creativity to raise awareness and promote sustainable changes. Minister Bonnici recalled that the United Nations itself says that many historical sites, especially those near the coast, are at risk of damage due to climate change. “Climate change is a collective and urgent responsibility. We want to build a better future for the present and future generations,” concluded Minister Bonnici.
