The Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti addressed the conference Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems 2024 which this year is being hosted by the Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy at the University of Malta.
Azzopardi Tanti emphasized on the importance that the Space sector is being given by the Government. He announced that next year, the Government will invest €1.9 million in initiatives and funding schemes linked to the space sector, in collaboration with the Institute of Space Sciences and Science Malta, the agency responsible for the implementation of the Government’s space policy and programs.
The Parliamentary Secretary also explained that Malta recently signed an agreement with the European Space Agency to join the Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS), as part of a five-year strategy that will help establish the Space sector in our country. .
Through this agreement, the Government will continue to build on the preliminary work that began to be done through the Science Malta Space Research Fund in collaboration with the European Space Agency. This fund has allowed local researchers to study and use data from satellites to be applied in fields such as agriculture, coastal management, health, cultural heritage preservation, and Artificial Intelligence.
“Committed to continue to strengthen the initiatives in favor of this sector and thus continue to implement the national strategy for Space,” concluded Azzopardi Tanti.
This conference also gave an opportunity to various experts to share knowledge and exhibit new software and systems in astronomy.
