The first stone of the new Fisheries Center was laid in Marsa which, as soon as the project is completed, will see the relocation of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. The new building will be built on four floors and equipped with technological equipment to serve the needs of the fishing industry and local fishermen.
The investment for this project will reach €5 million and it is planned to be completed by the end of the year 2025. These details were announced by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo and by the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said.
Minister Anton Refalo said that this building will lead to an improvement in the efficiency of the service provided by the department. “This building will have state-of-the-art technologies and modern communication systems, and it will also have a room where boats will be monitored through tracking systems such as VMS, GPS and Logbooks. Above all, this building was also done in a strategic way to further improve accessibility for fishermen and the public.” He concluded by saying that all this shows that the Government is committed to continuing to offer the best and best service to Maltese and Gozitan fishermen.
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said reiterated the Government’s commitment to continue investing in this sector because it fully believes in the work and service offered by local fishermen in the community. “We are announcing one project after another because we recognize the importance of our fishermen. With a center like this, the service provided by public officials will continue to improve and be more efficient,” continued the parliamentary secretary. She ended by saying that projects like this contribute to the regeneration plan in Marsa, with an investment that clearly shows the Government’s vision.
Director of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Bjorn Callus said that the Fisheries Hub in Marsa will serve so that the department can perform its duties better, where the fisherman will be in the center of his work. “Through this investment, we will improve the quality of work and increase efficiency, where together with another investment in an IT system, we will be able to reach the goal of service excellence. The Fisheries Hub will be instrumental in providing a safe and accessible place for both workers and customers, while it is a development with environmental and sustainable measures.”
