The infrastructural project on Triq il-Marfa to be completed the Cirkewwa Terminal

The work on the infrastructural project has been completed with the aim of facilitating and better organizing the traffic around the Cirkewwa Terminal. This happened by completing a continuous lane dedicated to cars going to Gozo from the Armier roundabout in the direction to the Ħirkewwa Terminal.

While works were underway on this project, Infrastructure Malta also carried out the necessary maintenance. Through an investment of €7 million, the journey is being facilitated for people who want to cross the bridge without closing access to parts around the Terminal for workers, public transport and traffic that is not going Gozo.

This traffic congestion for the last 13 years lost the public transport service and that of emergency when the waiting cars for the ship jumped out of the marshalling area, creating great challenges for others who wanted to access Cirkewwa at these times, including emergency vehicles and divers. This project was made to also address a record number of routes that are being registered to and from Gozo.

Minister Chris Bonett pointed out how with the addition of two lanes instead of one from Armier to Cirkewwa, it led to a better organization of this area and a reduction in traffic.

“The aim of this project has always been to better facilitate the journey to the Circewwa terminal for everyone crossing the ferry. After the work on the road to Għadira beach was successfully completed last month, we can now say that the infrastructure from the beginning of Triq il-Marfa to the Cirkewwa Terminal is completely new. Thus, while we are enhancing the value of this area, we are giving a better infrastructure to everyone who makes use of it,” stressed Minister Bonett.

The project was carried out on a stretch of two and a half kilometers, with the iron structures that separate the two lanes being changed and replaced by concrete structures that are certified to offer the best possible security. The change of these structures, which Infrastructure Malta introduced for the first time in 2019, made it more possible to win more space. The new design of the road thought to eliminate the travel of vehicles from one side to the other, while a new lighting system was installed and increased security measures.

Cyclists were also given importance, with the widening in certain areas of the existing bicycle lane on the road from the Marfa roundabout to Circewwa. The works on this project, which started in mid-February, were completed as promised before the start of the summer season.
