The renovation of the building of the Science Center in Pembroke was inaugurated after an investment of a quarter of a million euros was made to give the whole building a more modern look and at the same time the historic centre of the building was preserved.
The inauguration was done by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima together with Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella. All the work was done by the workers within the Logistics Section in the Office of the Permanent Secretary. “Science subjects are being given importance in the education of our children, thanks to the dedicated work being done by all those who work in this centre. It was appropriate to carry out this renovation and give it not only a modern environment, but also that this center be equipped with the latest technology, with a new hall and at the same time that we took care to preserve the building”, said Minister Clifton Grima.
The building houses the STEM Directorate, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) who are responsible for the administration and design of policies related to national STEM subjects within compulsory education, as well as the Directorate of -VET, about 170 people. During the work done, all the structures of the building were renovated, which served as the Officers’ Mess for the officers and is part of the buildings of the British Services when they were operating in Malta. Over time, while the building served different functions, its condition began to deteriorate.
Among the work done, there were extensive parts that were emptied of material that had accumulated over time, the electricity and water services were completely changed, new technologies were installed and a new hall of the highest level was built that could it also hosts conferences.
The Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella stated that the renovation of the center is part of the transformation that is taking place in the educational system. “The National Education Strategy gives importance to STEM and VET subjects and this is why this center was founded. Now the educators of these subjects have a place where they can continue to carry out their work through various activities for quality education.”
He thanked all the workers including those who worked on this project. Minister Clifton Grima thanked all those involved not only in the project of this building, but in all the ongoing projects. He also thanked the workers of this center for their work, dedication and commitment in this sector.
