The regeneration project of Pjazza Santa Margerita in Ta’ Sannat, which is one of the largest public spaces on the island of Gozitan, was inaugurated. This project also looked after the needs of this village so that the square is more accessible, with pedestrian areas that it can be enjoyed by the residents.
The project was carried out by the Ministry for Gozo together with the Local Council of Sannat. In an address he made, Prime Minister Robert Abela reiterated that this Government is continuing to bring about positive change, including in Gozo, where it is continuing to provide open spaces to the community. He continued that with the regeneration of this square another electoral promise is being fulfilled which is leading to an improvement in the quality of life of the residents.
He congratulated the Local Council of Sannat who, in joint work with the Ministry of Gozo, carried out this ambitious project and encouraged them to continue working in order to give more life to this square and to advance the Regional Strategy for the Development of Gozo, so that the vision of Gozo Island of Villages really becomes a reality.
“I hope that this investment will have a positive impact, especially on the families and those who visit this village. I encourage Sannatin to enjoy this wonderful square. They made it yours as they made it theirs before you. Take care of this investment that has been made so that those who come after you, they will also find a wonderful rest waiting for them,” said Prime Minister Robert Abela.
As part of the project all the paving was changed and the sidewalks were made accessible. New street furniture was also installed, such as new benches. Work was also carried out to renovate the church’s parapet, new lights were installed that make efficient use of energy, as well as bollards that will help to have structured parking in the square. The entire square now has a reinforced concrete base that can withstand vehicles. The project also took care to build underground passages for the services, so that the existing services are relocated underground.
Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri said that this project was carried out with coordinated and joint work between the Ministry and the Local Council, where this main refuge, spread over more than 4,000 square meters, has been regenerated and will be returned to the Sannat community and the Gozitan people.
“This is another project that has been carried out and that respects the Government’s vision, as we promised to continue strengthening and expanding the public spaces in our country, and this is not least in Gozo,” Minister Camilleri said.
The Mayor of Sannat Local Council Philip Vella also spoke during the inauguration. The Sannat Local Council as well as the residents were present for this inauguration.
