More investment in the community as Tarxien gets a new garden, football pitch and new swings

The beautification works were completed in the Veliko Tornovo Garden in Tarxien, which also involved the renovation of a 5-a-side football pitch adjacent to the garden. The works carried out by the Local Council of Tarxien were financed by funds of the Community Malta agency.

The renovation works also involved a new lighting system for the garden, the restoration of a gazebo, new swings and new carpets under them, an array of plants and restoration of the pedestals of the statue of the Annunciation and of a bronze monument.

The football pitch was inaugurated by the parents of constable Mark Farrugia who twenty-five years ago was killed in Tarxien while performing his duties. This is after the stadium was named for constable Mark Farrugia.

Some works in the same garden, including various art done on the walls, were done by people who are serving a prison term in the Kordin Correctional Facility, as part of their rehabilitation program.

During a ceremony, the Minister for the Interior, Security and Work Byron Camilleri said that this is an open and sporting space that is being returned to the community of Tarxien so that it can be enjoyed in the heart of the community. He claimed that this shows the Government’s commitment that together with the local council is improving the quality of life of the residents of Tarxien.

“It is also something wonderful that certain works were done by people who are serving a sentence of imprisonment in the Kordin Correctional Facility where it serves so that they not only continue their rehabilitation, but also give something back to the community”, concluded Minister Camilleri.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli said that it is gratifying that this project was carried out in collaboration with the Local Council of Tarxien, and that it is a project that promotes physical activity among them football.

“The Government is committed to continue promoting physical activity because it is a factor that improves the quality of life of the residents, and through this project in Tarxien we are achieving this goal. I hope that this pitch is used frequently by both children and even young people in order to train in it,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

Also present for the inauguration was the Mayor of Tarxien Joseph Abela Galea.
