During a meeting of the EU Energy Ministers held in Brussels today, Malta appealed for greater assistance to countries at the periphery of the European Union. These countries are not fully connected to the European energy network and have limited opportunities to increase renewables.
Malta, while connected to the European electricity grid, is not yet connected to the European gas grid.
Energy Minister Miriam Dalli emphasized the importance of a transition towards clean energy that ensures no country is left behind. She referred to the need for funding for energy projects to be distributed equitably among countries and to support innovative projects, such as offshore floating projects.
Miriam Dalli insisted that greater investments in infrastructure, more interconnections, and increased flexibility in investments in energy storage, including mass batteries, were required by all member states to move beyond polluting sources.
Minister Dalli also emphasized the need for the European Union to consider its borders, where several countries have strong renewable energy potential. She appealed to the European Commission to negotiate a regional agreement between the EU and third countries, ensuring that each member state has the opportunity to benefit from regional interconnection projects.
