An agreement was signed that will lead to the community of Hamrun being able to use the parking lot of the school Ex-Liceo Secondary School and Ex-Maria Assumpta Secondary Complex.
The agreement will not affect the use of parking lots by educators and school administration nor when there are mass activities organized by schools. The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima said, “This agreement is part of our work to bring education closer to the community and we are doing this with ‘various means. In every school we are modernizing as well as in those we are building new, where possible we are opening the facilities for the use of the respective communities. We believe that school spaces should be available to the community when they are not being used for the education of our children.”
He explained that among the facilities that are available for the use of the community are sports, halls and other spaces. Even the vehicle parking lots, as is being done through the agreement that was signed, the Ministry is seeing that these are not empty spaces when they are not in use.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli praised this agreement between the two schools and the Local Council of Hamrun which will continue to improve the quality of life of Hamrun residents. She said that free parking spaces in an urban location like Hamrun will significantly improve convenience for residents. “While I have confidence that this agreement will translate into peace of mind for vehicle owners resident in Hamrun, I appeal to everyone who makes use of this parking lot to follow the parking rules and hours ” insisted Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.
The agreement also includes specific provisions to ensure that the car parks are safe and properly cleaned. Security will be provided by security guards and surveillance cameras. The Mayor of the Local Council of Hamrun Christian Sammut thanked all those who were involved in the talks that led to this agreement. “This agreement will lead to alleviating the problem of lack of parking for the community of Hamrun and therefore the council is grateful that its request has been granted and that through the agreement this community will be served better,” said Mr. Sammut.
