In Hal Far, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced a new foreign investment that will be manufacturing parts of turbines that go to wind farms that generate clean energy. The investment from a company from Turkey, GIMAS, will be building a factory with an investment of €7.5 million and generate 44 new jobs. An academy will also be set up to train workers in specialized fields.
The Prime Minister said that today we are witnessing the start of a new industrial sector, the first of its kind, with investment in clean energy products that will create green jobs. What will be manufactured here in Malta will go into turbines that generate clean energy.
“When I think of sustainable development I don’t just think of the environment, but I think of economic opportunities and jobs. I have said many times that climate change, like any other challenge, can be the best economic opportunity for our generation”, asserted the Prime Minister.
He said that this is why this new investment in Malta is happening at an important time for us to continue diversifying our economy in sectors of innovation, technology and clean energy. This is also the culmination of the National Policy on Offshore Renewable Energy and our economic policy.
The Prime Minister said that the economy is experiencing unprecedented growth , where we have the highest growth rate and the lowest unemployment rate in Europe. He claimed that our country is in a crucial economic phase where we are making a necessary transformation to reach the environmental goals.
“Thanks to this we are attracting investment that focuses on companies that leave a higher value in the Maltese economy”, said the Prime Minister. He ended his speech by saying that in the future we will look at this day as the beginning of a new era for the manufacturing sector in Malta – the era of the green economy.
Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said that the investment that Gimas will make in our country is another demonstration of the trust that large international companies have in our country’s economy.
“Once again today we are one step closer to reaching the ambitious goal we wish to reach this year, which will be a record year for foreign direct investment in our country. A project like the one we announced today and many other projects would not have been possible without full synergy between our entities , including Malta Enterprise and INDIS which are delivering our concept of quality companies, offering quality jobs in this case in a new economic field for our country, that of the generation of clean energy as well as an academy so that the workers can improve their abilities and thus increase the opportunities with better wages. This goes hand in hand with the government’s line for more sustainability and with full respect for the environment” , concluded the Minister.
