Regeneration project of the Kalkara square and shore inaugurated

Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated the Kalkara square and waterfront regeneration project, a work carried out by the Corporation for the Regeneration of the Great Port (GHRC).

With this project an open space for families of 16,500m2 was created in the heart of the community, a pedestrian zone of 3,000m2 in the same square, a promenade beautified with street furniture and a better lighting system, a new swing and a system new services together with planted trees that continued to beautify the appearance of the heart of Kalkara.

Prime Minister Abela explained how a square was recreated and given to the people. He said that this was an important project among other big projects going on in Cottonera that this Government believes in its potential. Dr Abela noted how this part of Malta is attracting good investment with quality projects that put families at the heart. In this context, the Prime Minister stressed the balance where regeneration work does not mean to unload that of the past but to preserve the characteristics.

“We want Kalkara to be more beautiful, but by this we also mean that we want it to remain with its particular characteristics,” said Prime Minister Robert Abela, noting how the GHRC project, with which another square was given to the people, a place that was occupied by vehicles will now mean a space for the enjoyment of families and where the shore is beautiful for everyone to enjoy. The Prime Minister also mentioned the role of Local Councils in the important works that are carried out in collaboration with Government entities.

The Minister for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Great Port Miriam Dalli said that this is a major project through which Kalkara was beautified, the services were modernized and a space was given through which the center of the locality has truly become the beating heart of Kalkara.

“A project that is also a symbol of our commitment to continue creating more open spaces, where the community, families and people can meet; where with the economic and cultural activities, we offer moments of relief for the residents and even for those who visit our islands,” said Minister Dalli.

Kalkara Mayor Wayne Aquilina and GHRC CEO Gino Cauchi also spoke at the same inauguration. Mayor Aquilina said, “I’m proud that we’ve come this far. We are returning a beautiful beach and square, back to the people. A project that changed the dynamics of Kalkara and continued to raise the value and potential of the village. While I give thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone who was there in one way or another to make this dream come true for Kalkarisi.”

Gino Cauchi said that the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation is proud with the project’s implementation because Kalkara now boasts of a beautiful shoreline which is attracting many residents and visitors. “GHRC is committed to further implement more regeneration project in the Grand Harbour”, he added.
