“We want to focus on funds that ensure that existing companies become more competitive, that they can cope and respond effectively to the markets, and that they are attractive enough to attract more people to this sector.” The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo stated this while he was addressing the Council of European Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels.
Minister Anton Refalo stressed that a balance should be found between the promotion of practices in favor of the environment that do not compromise the viability of the agricultural sector. “We should consider a model of financial compensation that goes beyond making good only for the losses and expenses of the farmer or that is based only on the size of the agricultural land or the product. There is a need for more flexibility so that each member state has the strength and capacity to distribute the funds as and when there is a need,” repeated Minister Refalo.
Trade agreements with third countries were also discussed. Regarding this Minister Refalo stressed “We need to be careful so that these agreements are not detrimental to our own farmers and villagers. We must continue to support our farming communities while not burdening them with additional burdens and obligations.”
Minister Anton Refalo concluded by saying that the work should continue so that there is more simplification and flexibility in access to EU funds, especially in the areas of sustainability.
