In an address he made after visiting an HSBC bank building that has been completely converted into one that does not emit more emissions than it generates and is efficient in the use of energy, Prime Minister Robert Abela stressed the importance of we welcome change because it is in favor of the people. “The bigger the change, the more we have to believe in it for it to be successful,” stressed Dr. Abela when he was talking about the environmental core as part of the country’s priorities.
The project was carried out between the HSBC Malta Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. When he was visiting the building, the Prime Minister was explained to him how the material used in a beautiful environment for the workers in the building is all recycled. The project is inspired by models such as LEED, a holistic framework that addresses criteria and targets linked to addressing climate change.
The Prime Minister Robert Abela not only praised the collaboration between the HSBC foundation and the Chamber of Commerce but spoke about important goals that the country has for the infrastructure in Malta to work with a clean and low carbon operation neutral. He said that such a project should serve as an example for others, including in the private sector.
Prime Minister Abela also mentioned the role played by the financial sector to push green and clean investments in a collective effort. He said that the Government is open to discussion and continues to incentivize in favor of the environmental core. Dr. Abela sparked a discussion on whether it is time for the banks to incentivize more investment in buildings that will use more energy efficiency. This is through the services they offer to investors. He said that the Maltese Development Bank is an important tool to facilitate this.
The Prime Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to continue to give a clear direction in favor of sustainability and bring about changes that will continue to bring progress and improve the quality of people’s lives. Note how the Climate Change Authority, which the Government has started work on, will continue to bring together stakeholders with whom the Government will talk and bring about important and decisive changes. Here he notes how he looks forward that our country continues to move towards the future of sustainability because Malta has talented people who are able to be catalysts in the green heart. He concluded by saying how this core is the best economic opportunity for our generation.
