Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg embarked on a visit to Ethiopia at the invitation of the country’s new Foreign Minister. During the visit, a series of discussions took place aimed at strengthening Malta’s ties with this strategic partner in the Horn of Africa.
Minister Ian Borg held a meeting with Prime Minister Abih Ahmed Ali. He once again reiterated how Malta regards Ethiopia as a priority country as in the implementation of our foreign policy strategy vis-à-vis this important continent.
Discussions also took place regarding the first trade delegation to Ethiopia in recent days, led by TradeMalta. As happened in other countries, they explored the opportunities that this country offers for Maltese businesses and companies. From the initial indications and also according to recent political discussions, it appears that the interest is strong on both sides.
During this visit to Addis Ababa, he had a meeting with the new Foreign Affairs Minister of the country, Taye Atske Selassie. Here, Dr Borg wished every success to Minister Selassie in his new role. The primary discussion focused on the bilateral relationship between the two countries and how to continue to improve as has happened in recent years.
Matters related to the region were also discussed, as well as the emerging challenges and opportunities. Our country’s work in the United Nations Security Council and the upcoming Presidency that our country will assume in April were also touched upon. The situation in Ukraine and also that in the Middle East were on the agenda.
For these meetings, the Minister for Foreign Affairs was accompanied by the Ambassador of Malta to Ethiopia and the African Union, Ronald Micallef.
