The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo announced that through a new plant we will see diversification in the local product, as soon as the slaughterhouse will start working in the Public Slaughterhouse.
Through this investment, a modern plant has started operating that allows the blood used for the mazzit to be collected in a hygienic way, according to the highest European standards, and the villagers, shops or meat processors will now have access for this ingredient.
“According to the law, butchers who produce mazzit, (sweet blood sausage), could not sell to other businesses, and therefore this was limiting the possibility of the product being used by restaurants and food establishments, as well as by supermarkets and establishments similar Through this investment, and the regulatory permission obtained from the Slaughterhouse, now every mazzit producer who works this product in the Slaughterhouse can sell his mazzit from any establishment,” explained Minister Refalo .
Stefan Cachia, General Director of the Public Slaughterhouse explained how the ultimate goal of this plant in the Public Slaughterhouse is to be accessible to those who have their own business, where they can produce the mazzit .
Minister Refalo concluded by saying, “This service, together with others that we have announced in the past weeks and months, are showing the Government’s commitment to not only talk about the need for diversification, but facilitates by continuously making investments that give added value to local agricultural products, as well as allowing the private sector, including farmers, processors, meat sellers and even restaurants and food establishments, to continue diversifying the product local offering.”
