“We are here today because we have a common goal: to push our economy to become greener and more digitalised so that Malta – along with the rest of the European Union – can swiftly and successfully achieve the twin transition,” stated Minister for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli during her address to the financial industry at the Governance, Risk, Compliance and ESG Summit.
The summit, organised by the Malta Stock Exchange, brought together stakeholders from various sectors to explore avenues for accelerating the green transition in Malta. Minister Dalli commended the collective efforts of businesses in driving sustainability initiatives.
Minister Dalli highlighted Malta’s recent achievements in sustainable finance, notably the successful launch of the country’s first green bonds by Water Services Corporation. The issuance of the green bond marked a significant milestone, demonstrating the viability of green financing and attracting retail investors to support Malta’s sustainability endeavours.
“We wanted to send a message to Maltese companies that green bonds are possible and successful. Our aim is to encourage the private financial markets to move towards this common aim of greening Malta’s future,” stated Minister Miriam Dalli.
Minister Dalli also emphasised the importance of other recent initiatives, such as financial incentives to encourage more companies to report on Malta’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) portal. Through this support, the government is providing SMEs with the required resources to help them adopt sustainable practices and report their ESG progress on the Portal, furthering Malta’s progress towards its environmental targets.
“Our commitment to collaborate with the private investment community is unwavering. Together, we will continue to push forward the green and digital transition, ensuring a sustainable future for Malta and its citizens,” Minister Miriam Dalli affirmed.
Minister Dalli concluded her address by reaffirming her support for the business community’s efforts towards a greener Malta and reiterated the government’s commitment in continuing to advance environmental initiatives.
