The students and educators at Nadur Primary School are enjoying a modern educational environment
From this school year, 200 students and approximately 30 educators began to enjoy a modern educational environment with an investment of more than €6.3 million financed under the NextGenerationEU Program through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Malta.
With this investment, a two-storey building that was built at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, was given a completely new look and was modernized to meet today’s educational needs. Thus the Nadur school now has modern, accessible and comfortable educational spaces for students and educators.
The inauguration was done by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Funds, Equality, Reforms and Social Dialogue Chris Fearne, from the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima and from the Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri.
The Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne said that, “One of the priorities of the Facility for Recovery and Resilience is that large buildings, including public ones, in Malta have the necessary work done to make efficient use of energy. The works at the Nadur school in Gozo, which were financed by the same facility, led to this goal being reached and therefore this school, apart from now offering a nicer and more modern environment to the students and the teachers, it is also much more efficient in the use of energy.”
Minister Clifton Grima spoke about the unprecedented investment being made in the educational infrastructure through the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS). “With the investment we are making in the educational sector, we are modernizing the environment in which our children are getting their education, and where our educators are giving education. In Gozo alone, a massive investment is being made in this area, at the forefront of the Rabat Educational Complex, which is the only one of its kind and in which we are investing €18 million. In the educational sector, great work is going on through which we are making a transformation also through the National Strategy for Education 2024-2030,” said Minister Grima.
Minister Clint Camilleri explained that “During the last year we have been carrying out an outstanding work in the primary school of Nadur, where we did an extensive renovation which led to excellent and much more modern facilities and we were able to do this without we did not expel any student from the school. We divided the work into different phases and we managed to do it all at the same time that the children are learning here. Therefore, it is gratifying to see over 200 students learning here and enjoying this wonderful environment.” He concluded by saying that the Ministry will continue to fully invest in the educational infrastructure on the island of Gozitan.
Apart from the complete beautification of the school from the inside and outside, the project included the redesign of the open and recreational spaces, as well as the creation of new spaces for teaching extracurricular subjects. These include a dance studio, music room, literacy room, theater studio, and art classes.
An important part of the project was that the accessibility in the building was addressed so that it was in accordance with the law, while energy efficient measures were also introduced in the building, as well as more shaded areas were developed in the recreational space on the outside. The school has now also become almost carbon neutral, the use of renewable energy has increased, and the demand for energy has been reduced by at least 30%. Part of the project included the installation of new services, including light, water, drainage, CCTV, internet connection, alarms, and fire safety services.
Also present for this inauguration were the Chief Executive of the FTS Dr Neville Young, the Principal of the College of Gozo Sean Zammit, and the Head of the School Mary Jane Camilleri.
