Work will begin on the first phase of the Motorsport Complex, which will focus on the drag racing track with a number of changes to the facilities and the track itself, after the Board of the Planning Authority gave approval for this first phase of the project.
The first phase of the Motorsports track will see infrastructural improvements on the existing drag racing track, which will lead to this facility now being able to be certified by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and thus officially enters the FIA calendar. Therefore, with this work it will be possible for the track to host international Drag Racing activities.
The infrastructural work includes moving the tower to make the track longer, increased facilities and more safety measures for both drivers and spectators, around the track. The part of the spectators will also be increased so that it will now begin to accommodate 3,000 spectators. A control tower will be rebuilt, as well as a media space that will be of an international level. The facilities for drivers will be rebuilt, which will be more modern and include everything that drivers need.
With these improvements that will be made, the drag racing track, which is part of the Motorsport Complex, will now be the best facility of its kind in the Mediterranean.
The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima said that today’s approval from the Planning Authority came after a great deal of work that was done to make this dream now it will come true. “The fact that now the work will start in the coming weeks shows that the commitment of the Government in this project”, said Minister Grima.
