The Planning Authority approved the permit for the decommissioning of the San Luċjan plant for the dismantling of tanks and cleaning of the facility which was used for the storage of heavy fuel oil.
The Environment and Energy Ministry said that, following the permit issue, the Petromal company will be issuing a tender for the dismantling of the tanks by the end of the year. In a statement it said that in recent months Petromal underwent preparations of the process of the decommissioning plan to ensure safety and full protection of environment and the surrounding communities.
The Ministry said that the process is part of the plan for the Siċċa project – a €40 million investment on a sustainable project that will replace the fuel storage plant in southern Malta. It added that 18,000 cubic metres of land will provide a breathing space to the surrounding area with a hub that connects recreational space with investments in the green and blue economy.
