The Department for Public Works has invested over half a million euros in new equipment to make the work of the department increasingly sustainable, safe and efficient. This is as part of a plan to replace the oldest vehicles and machines that cause difficulties during the works. This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia during a visit he made to the Government garage in Kordin.
“Through this investment, the workers of this Department will be working with higher quality craft, safer and with less noise and environmental effects. In addition, this investment will lead to reducing the costs of operation and maintenance and the work on the projects will be done with less disruption,” said Parliamentary Secretary Farrugia.
The Parliamentary Secretary explained that part of the craft and vehicles used in the works have been used for a number of years. Because of this, the damages on them are frequent and apart from costing money, they also disrupt the progress and plan of the works. Therefore, he reiterated that this investment was very necessary and besides that it will bring about a positive change in the daily work of the workers it will ensure more efficiency in the completion of the projects.
The department has invested in five new trucks of sixteen tons each which will be used for the delivery of construction material and other goods, four trailers of three and a half tons to be used for the delivery of small craft and two two-tonne rollers that will be used for road maintenance work. In addition, an investment was also made in two mini-excavators of four tons that will be used for excavation work that are expected to arrive in our country next May. All the craft are equipped with the latest technology and with a certificate of compliance with European directives.
The Director General of the Department for Public Works Stephen Bonello said, “The introduction of these vehicles to the existing fleet will help the workers to carry out their duties with more efficiency and effectiveness. I believe that this investment will contribute to a better working environment, which will ultimately benefit both the workers of our Department and the communities we serve.”
