In 2023, Malta recorded the best tourism results in history in terms of arrivals, nights spent in our country and even remarkably in tourism expenditure in the Maltese economy. During the mentioned year, more than 3 million tourists arrived in our country and spent 20.2 million nights in the Maltese Islands and spent around €2.7 billion in the Maltese economy.
Significantly, while Europe as a region recovered an average of 96% the volumes it experienced back in 2019, last year Malta managed to exceed the number of visitors by 9% compared to last year before the pandemic.
The strongest markets were the Italian, English, French, German and Polish which accounted for 18.4%, 18.1%, 9.6%, 7.3%, 5.8% of the tourists who arrived in Malta last year.
These details were announced in a seminar organized by the Malta Tourism Authority with the theme ‘Writing History Together’ which was addressed by the Minister for Tourism and Public Cleanliness Clayton Bartolo.
Minister Bartolo pointed out how these results are not the end point but they throw more responsibility on the Government and the tourist community to continue raising the quality of the tourist product.
“Our goal for this year and beyond is to attract higher quality tourists throughout the year. We will do this by continuing to improve the efficiency of our country’s advertising abroad, strengthen our primary and secondary markets, improve air connectivity, preserve the cultural heritage and integrate sustainable practices among the spectrum of -Maltese hospitality,” concluded Minister Clayton Bartolo.
