Cleaner and more sustainable transport: Another investment in grants for new electric vehicles

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett announced an investment of €15 million in schemes for the purchase of new electric vehicles (EVs). Schemes that are carrying out budget measures for this year and that aim to encourage the purchase by individuals, voluntary associations, and enterprises of electric vehicles and motorcycles, including bicycles.

Minister Chris Bonett explained how these incentives will facilitate the transition of Malta and Gozo to cleaner and more sustainable transport, as part of a larger strategic plan that will lead to carbon neutrality.

He explained how in two years around 4,000 new electric vehicles were registered, so that there are currently around 15,000 electric or hybrid vehicles on Maltese roads.

“This is the long-term vision that our Government is committed to achieving, according to the objectives of the EU, to have a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Without putting the burden on the citizens, we are giving support through these financial grants to have clean means of transport.”

Transport Malta is working to make the process for the public to benefit from these incentives to be more efficient, including that the application will be accessible online. This will reduce the time for the applications to be processed so that eventually the grants will be given to the eligible applicants.

The Chief Executive of Transport Malta, Jonathan Borg, said how this investment from European funds will offer an incentive for the public to invest more in electric vehicles. These will ensure a better and sustainable environment in our country.

The initiatives and grants announced for 2024 include:

  • Grant for the purchase of Electric Vehicles: €500 for each new electric bicycle; €2,000 to €6,000 for each new electric motorcycle, tricycle, or quadricycle; €11,000 for each car or electric van;
  • Scrapping Scheme – €500 per motorbike; €1,000 per car; €30,000 for each minivan; €50,000 for coaches who have been there for more than 10 years;
  • Additional financial grants of €1,000 for the scrapping of old registered vehicles in Gozo.

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids with an electric range of 50km or more will continue to be exempt from registration tax and the annual road license for the first five years from the date of registration.
