The Local Government Division issued an expression of interest for the local councils in order to be offered a service for maintenance work by the workers of the same Directorate, in the local libraries that fall under the responsibility of the same local councils. In total, maintenance and renovation work was carried out in eight local libraries. This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli.
The main objective of this expression of interest was that the local councils continue to deliver a quality service to the residents. The local libraries that benefited from this expression of interest are located in the locality of San Ġwann, Gudja, Sliema, Fgura, Xgħajra, Gżira, Swieqi and Rabat, Malta.
“Maintaining local libraries is essential so that residents have a quality place from which to borrow books or do research,” said Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli. She explained that this initiative in favor of maintaining local libraries complements the Government’s work in favor of a culture of reading among children and families.
Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli ended her speech by calling on residents of all ages to go to local libraries and borrow the books available to them, because books are the key to education and knowledge.
For his part, the Director General for the Local Government Division, Emil Vassallo said that the Division is committed to continue assisting the Local and Regional Councils in carrying out initiatives that benefit the residents. He praised the commitment of the local councils who benefited from this initiative in order to carry out the necessary work for the maintenance of their respective libraries and thus continue to promote more reading among the residents.
The workers of the Local Government Division carried out work according to the needs of each respective library. These works included whitewashing and covering the exterior and interior walls, fitting new shelving, modifying the lighting so that the libraries are better lit, maintenance on beams, among other work.
