During this year the Eastern Regional Council is occupying the title of Cultural Region 2024. For this purpose, this Regional Council in collaboration with the 12 localities within it, will stage a cultural program which celebrates and promotes the unique cultural heritage of these twelve localities. The Local Government Division financed the Eastern Regional Council a quarter of a million euros for the implementation of this cultural program, while the Region will contribute €25,000 for the same purpose.
This was said by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli in the presence of Eastern Regional President Anthony Chircop. In her speech, Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli said that the title of Cultural Region will make an additional contribution to the promotion of culture, artists and local traditions of the twelve localities within the Region. East. “Cultural initiatives and activities shape in us a sense of community and continue to strengthen our identity”, stressed the Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

The President of the Eastern Region Anthony Chircop said that the main objective of the cultural program is to promote the diverse cultural aspects that celebrate ancient and contemporary traditions and to create space for other cultures as well. Mr. Chircop also announced that the Region will be publishing a Policy Document that will recommend various environmental measures in relation to social activities organized by the Regional Council and the Local Councils.
The twelve localities that are part of this Region are Għargħur, Birkirkara, Gzira, Iklin, Ħal Lija, Msida, Pietà, San Għiljan, Pembroke, Swieqi, Sliema and Of Xibex. The Director General and the Directors of the Local Government Division, the Mayors, the Councilors and the Executive Secretaries of the Local Councils within the Eastern Region were also present at the news conference. .
