The Government of Malta and the Cabinet of Ministers have asked to intervene in a case opened by the Leader of the Opposition against the State Attorney.

The Minister for Justice Jonathan Attard and the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul gave details about this request.

It was explained how this is a case where, despite every impression it tries to give, it aims to use the Court as a political pawn and is even undermining actions that the Maltese government is taking in international arbitration. At the same time the case also tries to undermine the democratic system of our country as the Opposition tries to bring to nothing the strength of a Government that decides and acts on behalf of the citizens who elected it.

Therefore, Minister Jonathan Attard explained that with the demands put forward by the Leader of the Opposition an attack is being made on the function, prerogative and power of the Government, which power is entrusted to the Government through an electoral mandate.

Among others, Minister Attard explained, with his action the Leader of the Opposition is trying to change a decision taken by the same Government and Cabinet on what judicial path should be taken in the national interest after the judgment on the concession of -hospitals.

The Government is protecting the national interest and all its decisions were made on the advice and with the assistance of the same State Attorney and local and international law firms after taking cognizance of the material facts and above all in the national interest . With his lawsuit the Leader of the Opposition is even threatening these actions.

Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul reiterated that this case is nothing more than a partisan political attempt, through actions intended to change the way a democratic country operates.

Parliamentary Secretary Ellul stressed how the Opposition shouts a lot about democracy, but then it is itself that makes the biggest anti-democratic political move, this with a partisan and dangerous cause that has no legal basis and that goes against the national interest.

“These maneuvers even extended to threats and blackmail of personal action against several officials of the country. This with the main aim of disrupting their official work and subjecting them to the control of the Opposition. Behavior as already described, despicable,” said Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul.

The Minister Jonathan Attard and the Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul concluded by saying that therefore, in light of all this, the Government is intervening because it will not be allowing anyone to try to harm our country with a frivolous action, without base and politically motivated, and that any damage that will be caused by this case, whoever opened it will have to answer for it.
