Republic Day commemorates the day when Malta revised its constitution and effectively became a Republic. Consequently, Malta no longer had a foreign Head of State, as it ceased to be under the sovereignty of the British monarch, and instead appointed the first President of the Republic of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo. On the occasion of the 49th anniversary of Republic Day, Festivals Malta through the National Festivities Committee, together with the Office of the President will organise activities in commemoration of this day.
On Wednesday 13th December, Republic Day, at 10:00 in the morning, a ceremonial parade will be organised by the Armed Forces of Malta. Attending amongst others for this parade will be the country’s highest authorities including Dr George Vella, President of Malta, and Robert Abela, the Prime Minister. Festivals Malta invites the public to attend this ceremony in St George Square, Valletta. At 11:00 in the morning there will be an investiture ceremony and the awarding of medals in the Grand Council Hall, in the Grand Master’s Palace, Valletta. All these events will be broadcast live on TVM News+.
At 01:15 in the afternoon, the President of Malta will lay a wreath at the monument dedicated to Malta as a republic, in Marsa.
