Minister Jonathan Attard attends and participates in the Council of Ministers of Justice

The Minister of Justice Jonathan Attard attended and participated in the Council of Ministers of Justice that met in Brussels. The meeting began with a discussion on a number of legislative proposals, including regulations on the transfer of proceedings in criminal matters and a directive that amends the existing directive on the rights of victims.

On this topic, Minister Attard stressed how clear it is that work is needed to continue improving the protection and support of victims and to avoid re-victimization. Regarding the compensation for the victims, he said that there should be no doubts that the compensation for the victims should be adequate and that, as far as possible, this should come from the author of the crime.

The Minister referred to the work carried out and being carried out by the Maltese Government when it comes to victims, including when it comes to children. He said that an investment is being made, at a national level, in order to create an environment in favor of children, including in matters related to family law.

On the agenda of the Council of Ministers, there was also Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and also the function of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). On this topic Minister Attard remarked, “The cooperation in the operation between the EPPO and the Maltese national Authorities has improved effectively and we look forward to continue the legislative process in the Parliament of Malta , so that with amendments to the Criminal Code the operational cooperation continues to be strengthened.”
