“Malta and Germany have where to strengthen the strong cooperation that already exists today Germany is the biggest commercial partner for Malta with a strong increase in export and import in this last decade.”
It was this sentiment that Prime Minister Robert Abela conveyed after a meeting he had with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin. In comments to the media present at the Chancellery in the German capital after the meeting with Chancellor Scholz, Prime Minister Robert Abela explained how Malta and Germany have common interests that lead to both countries increasing their cooperation among them in economic fields. Manufacturing with a more innovative and technological operation, pharmaceuticals, financial services and aviation were mentioned here.
All this with a clear direction in favor of investment that is more friendly to the environment and that creates quality careers for Maltese and Gozitan citizens. Connectivity was an important point in the discussions, with Malta pointing out that between the two countries there will continue to be solid connectivity with a strong national airline that will start working from next March.
The discussions in Berlin were also about the issue of immigration, with Malta mentioning the prevention of arrivals and the fight against human trafficking. Malta also pointed out the need that it is not enough to interrupt the illegal activities of human traffickers, but it must be a collective effort for the traffickers to answer for their actions before justice.
In the talks with the Chancellor of Germany, Prime Minister Robert Abela stressed on strengthening dialogue and support towards other countries in the Mediterranean such as Libya and Tunisia. The two leaders also discussed climate security and Malta’s role with a seat in the United Nations Security Council. It was said here that in the face of global challenges, Malta continues to deliver a strong voice in favor of peace. “The fact that our country welcomed a high-level international meeting to find peace in Ukraine, called Ukraine Peace Formula, and the resolution pushed by Malta adopted by the Security Council continue to show our country’s commitment for peace in different regions,” pointed out the Prime Minister in a news conference also addressed by Chancellor Scholz.
The two leaders also spoke about the energy sector and also towards an environmental core in this area. The importance of research and innovation and strategic cooperation in different regions was mentioned here, such as what Malta is doing to make the Mediterranean a center of clean energy.
In Berlin, the Prime Minister Robert Abela was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg, the Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands Silvio Schembri, the Minister for -Interior, Security, Reforms and Equality Byron Camilleri, the Ambassador of Malta to Germany Vanni Xuereb, and the Head of the Secretariat in the Office of the Prime Minister Glenn Micallef.
