Towards more female participation in sports journalism

“Female participation in sports journalism is a milestone that can be overcome, and should be overcome, just as other milestones are overcome when women enter every profession, including journalism”, said the Minister for Inclusion, Volunteering and Consumer Rights, Julia Farrugia Portelli, while addressing a seminar organized by the Sports Journalists Association (GĖGS) with the theme ‘Training Women Sports Journalists / Reporters to work more at ease in the Sports Media industry’.

The two main objectives of this seminar were to encourage more women to enter the sports media industry as well as to help those women who are aspiring to be sports journalists to work in a more comfortable environment.

Minister Farrugia Portelli thanked the GJS for the initiative they took to organize this seminar which she described as a very useful tool to encourage more women to enter the field of sports journalism. “Just as we have reached the other journalistic branches, and as we already have women journalists in this field, we can also have more. A seminar that links to the principle of inclusion and that should serve as an impetus for more women to approach this branch of journalism. Just as we have overcome other milestones when it comes to women, this milestone will continue to be overcome,” concluded Minister Farrugia Portelli.

The seminar was funded by funds from the Training Initiative Scheme (TIS), which GĐGS received from the Maltese Council for the Voluntary Sector within the Ministry for Inclusion, Volunteering and Children’s Rights. Consumer.

Sandro Micallef, the President of GĖGS, referred to the financial assistance from TIS funds as, “An opportunity to give training to our female colleagues in this field. The Sports Journalists Association has always been in favor of the inclusion, especially of women in this sector which is unfortunately dominated by men. On behalf of the Executive of GĖGS we thank MCVS for this opportunity and we look forward to working on other similar projects together in the future.”

The seminar was attended by female members of GĐGS who are sports journalists and reporters, together with foreign speakers who shared their knowledge in this profession. The foreign guests were Francesca Benvenuti, sports presenter and reporter for SportMediaset, and Zsuzsa Csisztu, editor, reporter and presenter with ATV Magyar, which is the most popular private station in Hungary.
