Malta took on one of the strongest teams in the UEFA European Championship qualifiers and came away with their head held high.
Ukraine went into this game knowing a win was vital to maintain their chances of a top two finish and a place in the Euro 24 Finals. Ukraine, FIFA world ranked 24th, were expected to enjoy a pleasant evening in the warmth of the Maltese autumn. Instead, it turned into a battle for survival as the visitors struggled to cope with the press by Malta from the very first whistle.
The final score-line, a 3-1 loss, is harsh on a Maltese side who challenged Ukraine in all areas of the pitch.
With just over ten minutes played, Malta took the lead through Paul Mbong when he ran at the Ukranian defence and fired low under the legs of keeper Anatoliy Trubin.
A shock start for the visitors who tried to respond but were frustrated by a solid Maltese defence. Ukraine did find a break-through late in first half when Georgiy Sudakov’s shot was deflected by Ryan Camenzuli past Bonello for an own goal. Minutes later Ukraine took the lead when Joseph Mbong fouled Mudryk inside the area. Artem Dovbyk was relieved to see his penalty fly under Bonello.
Malta nearly drew level when Matthew Guillaumier hit the crossbar on the stroke of half-time. Bonello pulled off a fine save in stoppage time as Ukraine surged forward.
After the restart Malta had the better early chances with Paul Mbong and Kyrian Nwoko going close.
Five minutes from time, Mykhailo Mudryk sealed the issue with a third goal for Ukraine.
The points went to Ukraine who leapfrogged Italy, who were soundly beaten by England, to go second in Group C.
But credit to Malta who produced one of their best games in quite a while.
Bonello and the Mbong brothers were outstanding, Steve Borg, Jean Borg and Enrico Pepe solid at the back, Ryan Camenzuli on the flank along with Joseph Mbong, Nikolai Muscat joined Matthew Guillaimier and Yannick Yankam in patrolling the midfield while Kyrian Nwoko worked tirelessly with goal scorer Paul Mbong up front.
