The Ministry of Health has started offering the Oncotype DX test for people with a particular type of breast cancer who do not necessarily need chemotherapy. This is after this test was approved by the European Medicines Agency in recent months.
The Oncotype DX test helps the patient’s medical team determine if chemotherapy can be avoided and a more specific treatment is used instead or if the use of chemotherapy is necessary to prevent the cancer from spreading.
This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne during a visit to the Day Care Department at the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Hospital (SAMOC) where he met the patients and workers. In this way, explained the Deputy Prime Minister, the professionals together with the patients will be able to make more informed decisions about the patient’s treatment.
“The Department of Health and our Hospitals continue to be at the forefront to always offer the most advanced treatments to our patients,” claimed Deputy Prime Minister Fearne.
