As the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly commences, the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, is currently in New York, United States, engaging in a series of meetings, both bilateral and multilateral, with the aim of further enhancing our country’s reputation on various fronts.
On Monday, Minister Borg had the opportunity to address a ministerial meeting on the Middle East Peace Process and how it can be revitalised. Here, Minister Borg reiterated how Malta has consistently supported what is known as ‘the two-state solution’ and will continue to do so in the future. He emphasised that for the peace process to succeed, there must be a willingness from all parties involved to make compromises that will lead to a common future. Minister Borg expressed his satisfaction with Malta’s Presidency of the United Nations Security Council in February, where, for the first time since 2016, a joint statement was adopted by the entire Council.
Minister Ian Borg also attended the meeting of European Affairs Ministers, where Malta stressed the importance of coordination between European Union countries, even on the basis of United Nations resolutions. He emphasised that “it is only through a united voice that we can have better coordination with international partners.”
The Minister for Foreign Affairs also represented the Maltese Government at the ministerial meeting organised to address global challenges associated with the issue of synthetic drugs. He believes that international cooperation is the key to effectively combating transnational crime, as synthetic drugs have become the main cause of such criminal activity.
Lastly, Minister Borg participated in the Leaders’ Summit on Sustainable Development Goals. During this important meeting, he highlighted the urgency of implementing the 2030 Agenda. It is crucial for all states to be prepared and resilient for unexpected events that can arise in light of the ongoing crises and devastating news we are witnessing.
