Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality Byron Camilleri and Italian Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi

A bilateral meeting was held in Rome between Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality Byron Camilleri and Italian Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi. Both ministers highlighted the strong relationship between the two countries and how despite the difference in size, Malta and Italy share common realities and challenges.

During the meeting, Minister Camilleri and Minister Piantedosi agreed on the need to increase cooperation in preventing irregular migration and combating migrant smuggling to avoid loss of life at sea. Both ministers also agreed on the need to collaborate jointly in the field of returns of failed asylum seekers and to continue building strategic partnerships with key third countries, particularly Libya and Tunisia.

At the end of the meeting, the two countries agreed to meet more regularly on a technical and political level to jointly and effectively address their common challenges.
