The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo, launched a pilot project as promised in the election manifesto, through which he will strengthen and continue to give an identity to the local product of Maltese and Gozitian farmers.
Through the pilot project, labeling will be introduced to identify the establishments that make use of local products. Among these establishments are restaurants, grocery stores and even agritourism that sell, process or serve vegetables that have been grown with methods that have little or no impact on the environment.
Minister Anton Refalo explained that the first phase of the pilot project will focus on products coming from Pitkalija and in which two main food establishments in our country will be involved. “This project also aims to continue promoting the local product which leads to the consumer choosing and buying this product. With initiatives of this type we are continuing to reward the courage of Maltese and Gozitan farmers.” Minister Refalo concluded by saying that during the coming months they will continue to implement other phases of this pilot project, with the ultimate aim of continuing to give identification to the Maltese product.
The CEO of the Malta Food Agency, Brian Vella, said that, “This pilot project goes hand in hand with the work and the vision of the agency, where our goal is to give more value to the producers as well as strengthening consumer confidence in local products.”
