“As a country, we look forward to continue our work with Moldova towards the common goal of consolidating our longstanding relationship, based on a shared political vision that can ensure significant results and innovative initiatives.” This was stated by the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg, during a press statement at the end of a bilateral meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Nicu Popescu.
Minister Ian Borg explained that the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Moldova and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies of Malta, earlier today, is evidence of this shared commitment between the two countries.
Borg expressed Malta’s optimism in improving this bilateral relationship and the visit of Minister Popescu is testament to the already existing will, also in light of the discussion held between Prime Minister Robert Abela and Moldova’s President Maia Sandu. Minister Borg reiterated that Malta will continue to support Moldova’s candidacy for EU membership.
Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu thanked Minister Ian Borg and our country for the hospitality he received during his visit to Malta. He praised the level of discussions he had during today’s bilateral meeting and claimed that the time has come to intensify the already strong relations between the two countries. The Deputy Prime Minister showed his appreciation towards Malta for its support towards Moldova in favour of their EU accession. He further reiterated that he looks forward to further discussions in the future.
During the meeting, the two ministers also had the opportunity to update each other on various pending issues between the two countries and discussed current issues such as the Russian aggression on Ukraine, the Eastern Partnership (EaP) cooperation, and other current events.
