In Geneva, the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul addressed the 111th International Labour Conference of the United Nations, whereby he emphasised on the role of social justice in shaping a sustainable future.
This conference is organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and offers a platform for participants worldwide to engage on critical work-related issues. This year’s conference focuses on the advancement of social justice.
In his speech, Parliamentary Secretary Ellul explained Malta’s commitment to ensure decent work and social justice as fundamental pillars for a fair and just society. He emphasised that the availability of and access to decent work plays a central role in advancing social justice.
Moreover, the Parliamentary Secretary presented Malta’s position on the advancement of platform workers, a new reality for workers across various countries. “With reference to platform work, the Maltese Government, after extensive consultations with all social partners, enacted legislation which gave platform workers legal rights and benefits such as various leave and overtime entitlements and statutory bonuses, to mention a few”, Ellul said.
Presenting more concrete measures that the Maltese Government has taken to combat pressing global challenges related to the world of work, Ellul highlighted the Government’s efforts to enhance working conditions, including the regularisation of temping agencies.
On the broader issue of productivity, improved working conditions, higher wages and ultimately raising living standards, Ellul explained how during the past year, the Maltese Government has also set up a Low Wage Commission, composed of all the social partners to put forward recommendations aimed at improving the minimum wage.
“This Commission shall take into account the trend in price levels and increases in selected collective agreements – and this to ascertain that any proposed increase in the minimum wage will reflect ‘sector vulnerabilities’ and ‘productivity gains”, Parliamentary Secretary Ellul said.
While attending the International Labour Conference, the Parliamentary Secretary also held a meeting with Gilbert F. Houngbo, the newly appointed Director General of the ILO.
