The renovation work has reached an advanced stage at Dar l’Impenn, in Farruġ, a residence run by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) which helps people start to tackle the problem of addiction, especially that of drugs.
The Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon visited the ongoing works in this residence together with the CEO of the Alfred Grixti Foundation and several professionals who will be running these programs.
This facility is not only being renovated but new infrastructural works are being carried out in order to create an environment that helps more in the drug rehabilitation process. This national service offers a safe place to observe patients while they are transitioning or stabilizing on medical treatment related to substance abuse or undergoing a detoxification process. In total this residence is equipped with six beds where patients can be given medical services related to addictions.
This service offers the possibility for clients to receive medical treatment under the observation of a nurse and care worker 24 hours a day. The medical plans for each patient who enters Dar l’Impenn are decided by the doctors of Aġenzija Sedqa within the Detox Center (Substance Misuse Outpatients Unit). This is done in collaboration with other entities that are following the patient or that will continue the treatment plan after the patient leaves Dar l’Impenn, whether followed in the community or going to the program residential.
This process serves as the first step of reform, before these people enter the rehabilitation program spread over a period of months in Santa Maria Community. Here, psychosocial services and longer-term treatments are provided that address challenges linked to the emotions and behavior of the individual.
During the past year, Dar l’Impenn addressed 155 cases, the majority of which were for alcohol and drug detoxification, while a number of other people entered this residence as a gradual step for -rehabilitation program. “I believe that this is another powerful service that sends a clear message that we are here to provide help and effective treatment that will help a person return to society. The problem of drug addiction is one that we must continue to fight with every possible means. It’s never too late to be brave and come forward and seek help”, concluded Minister Michael Falzon.
