During a conference attended by local government partners, the document of the National Strategic Vision of Local Government 2023-2030 was launched. This is after a broad consultation process was launched last year which led to the launch of this document by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli and the Minister for National Heritage, Arts and the Local Government Owen Bonnici.
The aim of this document is to lead to a renewal in the field of local government, with a strategic vision that offers a way forward based on higher levels of good governance, residing at the core of the work of the local councils and an environment that improves the quality of life of the residents. A vision that complements that of the Government in the field of local government.
The Strategic Vision is designed on five main themes that reflect a holistic vision that incorporates and encourages more inclusive, sustainable and creative communities for residents to live, work and integrate in a healthier and cleaner environment. These are: Good and Effective Governance; Regional Resource for Local Councils; Localities with a Cleaner Environment; Local Councils Close to the People; Digital Priority in Local Government.
Minister Owen Bonnici said: “The members of the local councils are making tireless efforts to make a significant difference in the lives of the members of our community. They are also working closely with local businesses and community groups to promote economic growth and create a vibrant and prosperous community that we should truly be proud of.” He concluded by praising the work that was done to draw up and launch this strategic vision document and said that the government is committed to seeing that the local government continues to move forward.
Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli explained that in order for the local councils to continue to play their role in the communities, they need to adapt to the times, operate in strong structures and have the tools required. She emphasized that the strategic vision is a living instrument, that the local government partners must continue to build on and improve the ideas that are gathered in it. “It is our duty to serve the residents in the best and most efficient and effective way, in order to continue to improve their quality of life and to address the needs of all localities,” concluded Alison Zerafa Civelli.
During the same conference a discussion was held that dealt with the 30th year since the establishment of the local councils in Malta and Gozo and the implementation of the strategic vision. A program commemorating the 30th Anniversary was also announced, which includes activities and initiatives from now until November 2023. This was announced by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee Aaron Zahra who explained that the program has in the center those closest the local government which are the regional presidents, the mayors, the councillors, the executive secretaries and all the workers of the local councils.
