The residents of Naxxar can once again enjoy the Mill of Għabba after it has been restored to its original state as it was built more than 300 years ago.
The inauguration was made by the Local Council of Naxxar and the Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett.
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that the Planning Authority financed over €400,000 from the Development Planning Fund (DPF) in order to carry out a full restoration of the mill machinery, and the reconstruction and -installation of new sterns.
“The conservation of the Maltese cultural heritage is a mission for all of us, so I look forward to more similar projects to continue to renew the commitment of this government in favor of the preservation of the cultural and environmental heritage, and the use wise and structured of public and European funds,” said Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi.
Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett said that the project was carried out with an investment of €678,000 from the European Fund for Regional Development.
“With this project, the locality of Naxxar has managed to restore this mill which has now returned to its glory and will serve as an attraction for both Maltese and tourists as it is estimated that it will be here with the 3,900 visitors a year who visit the mill,” said Dr. Bonett.
Mayor of Naxxar, Anne Marie Muscat Fenech Adami, said that through this project, the mill has been restored to its original state. The project also looks at a cultural aspect where part of the building will also serve as a cultural center in the community and a tourist attraction. The work on this mill around €1.5 million between funds from the Planning Authority, schemes for local councils and European funds.
