Wednesday nights UEFA Champions League ties set up a mouth-watering last four encounter between some of the most exciting sides in European football.
Inter, the blue half of the city of Milan, meet city rivals Milan in the first leg of their semi-final at the San Siro on May 9th. The prospect of these two giants of Italian football going head to head for a tilt at Europe’s glittering prize truly promises to be a titanic encounter.
Inter appeared to have a comfortable, if narrow 2-0 lead over Benfica in their quarter final tie at the San Siro. It turned out to be much less a formality as the Portuguese side fought back to earn a 3-3 on the night but unable to overhaul the two goal deficit from the first leg. A pulsating last eight that pits Inter against their arch rivals Milan. Does football get much better?
Not to be outdone, Manchester City completed the formalities with a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich in their quarter final second leg. That man Haaland, who else, scoring for City to put them 4-0 up on aggregate scores before Bayern drew level late in the game. Too late to affect the outcome, City having done the work in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium and claiming their place in the semi-final against Spanish giants Real Madrid with the first leg in Spain on May 9th. Could this be the year manager Pep Guardiola finally wins the one title that has eluded him?
