After the winter “pause”, which started last September, Ponte Ferries between Malta and Augusta has now stopped completely and it is not known whether it will start again with another company after the Maltese company formally wrote to the Port System Authority of eastern Sicily arguing that it does not intend to continue the service and requesting the revocation of the concession of the area to the ro-ro wharf of the commercial port of Megara.
“For their own reasons they could not go ahead with the service and therefore they asked us to revoke the concession – explains Francesco Di Sarcina, president of the Eastern Sicily Sea Port System Authority.
Ponte Ferries has had a troubled history, it’s first trip between Malta and August in August 2021 halted at the last minute because of a legal dispute with authorities in Sicily.
Services did eventually get underway in November of 2021 but then stopped last September for a winter break.
