In a meeting in the Berga of Castile, the Prime Minister Robert Abela and the European Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn discussed the preparations for a mid-term evaluation of the European Union’s budget, known as the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).
The prime minister described this meeting as an opportunity for the Maltese Government to listen to the European Commission’s plans in this regard, while explaining the priorities of our country in terms of spending funds. Europeans in the coming years.
Regarding the discussions on the evaluation of the MFF, the Prime Minister Robert Abela referred to the agreement reached in July 2020, with the Maltese Government then having negotiated the largest allocation of European funds for Malta, and explained that from then the global realities changed, in particular as a result of the war in Ukraine. This affected, among others, energy and food prices.
He reiterated the importance of having more flexibility to also use more funds and address these realities, as was done at national level, so that the challenges are being borne by the government and not by families and businesses.
As far as competitiveness is concerned, the prime minister said that Malta agrees with spending to have incentives in specific sectors so that businesses in the EU are more competitive, while he emphasized the importance that these aids they will reach the entire supply chain so that small and medium-sized businesses can also benefit from them.
When he spoke about the administrative level of the European Commission and the European institutions, Prime Minister Abela stressed the importance that citizens from small countries like Malta are also seriously considered for high positions.
