One of the problems faced by the residents of Birżebbuġa, especially in the summer, is the lack of parking.
But this problem will be alleviated, as the work on the new parking lot of over 400 cars by the Freeport is progressing.
This was said by the Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands Silvio Schembri when he visited the works in this car park. When the car park is completed, it will be handed over to the Local Council of Birżebbuġa for the use of the residents. He reiterated that this is the positive way the Corporation helps the community of Birżebbuġa, in this case with an investment of €3.2 million.
This parking lot, which is expected to be ready by the beginning of this summer, is being built on land of over 5,000 square meters and is divided into three floors, with two floors of which will be used by the residents.
“The importance of this port for the economy of our country is recognized by everyone, but as a government we are committed to seeing that the community of Birżebbuġa lives in a serene way. The Corporation actually carries out several corporate social responsibility projects in the locality, including with the double glazing scheme in the past and aid to the local sports associations. This car park is the biggest Corporate Social Responsibility project that will be used by the residents of Birżebbuġa,” said Silvio Schembri.
The Minister mentioned how Freeport will be investing in a shore-to-ship project so that pollution in the water will be drastically reduced. He also mentioned the Freeport squaring off project, a €103.8 million project that will make this port more competitive. “However, at the same time we have not forgotten the residents. In fact the Freeport waived the right to install cranes in the part closest to the people, as well as that a roll-on roll-off activity cannot be carried out during the night and in the early hours of the morning, Minister Schembri concluded.
Freeport CEO David Magro said that in this car park there will also be spaces for people with special needs and charging pillars for electric cars. He also thanked Projects Plus who are building this car park.
